Video Editing Instructions
Â
Thank you for your help editing our videos. These instructions are designed to help you. If you have any additional questions, please email me.
Â
The videos generally fall into two categories:
Â
You may also be asked to create Video Thumbnails.
Â
You should NOT need to edit out any outtakes or silences; I will deliver a clean take for you to use.
Â
***PLEASE NOTE: Videos should not take more than 3 hours to edit. Please let me know if you think it will require more time.***
Â
Use this Google Spreadsheet to keep track of the video projects:
Google SpreadsheetI will create a Google Drive folder for your video projects.
Â
Once you have completed editing the video and/or creating the thumbnail:
- Upload them to the Dropbox folder with the original files. Add “-EDITED” to the end of the video file name.
- In the Google Spreadsheet, change the Status to “In Review”
Â
You can find other assets that you need, including fonts and logos, here:

Â
1. Â Talking Head Videos
Â
Checklist:
- Insert the “Build Your Community” intro sequence
- Add title cards
- Add zoom jump cuts to both hide the edits and break up the monotony
- Add or adjust the YouTube end card
Â
Example:
Â
1.  Add the “Build Your Community” opening title scene:
- Every video begins with a teaser spoken by me, followed by a fast video clip that says, “Build Your Community.”
- Use a direct cut to introduce this title scene, and a “wormhole zoom” transition to return to me (I use “Wormhole 3 in Filmora)
- I usually need to detach the audio from the original title scene clip to keep this sequence quick

 2. Add the Title Cards:
- I will provide the text and timestamps so you know where to add the title screens; do NOT add title cards unless specifically asked.
- Quickly fade into the full screen covered in the color #1DB1E2, set to 50% opacity.
- The text should be Title Case (first letter of each word capitalized), NOT all capitalized.
- The words should fade in. Use the font Typographica, centered and with a size of 90pt, or as large as the screen will allow.
- Hold the title on screen for a reasonable amount of time, then fade out

3.    Add the Zoom Jump Cuts:
- Zoom cuts are jump cuts from a wide shot to a close-up shot (or from a close-up shot to a wide shot); we should not see the camera zoom in.
- Always mask noticeable cuts where I removed “outtakes”
- Use the zoom jump cuts to keep the video from getting boring. Generally, never go more than 7 seconds without a zoom jump cut unless there is a title screen. It’s often obvious when a phrase can be “set off” by a zoom jump cut.
- At the same time, don't overdo the Zoom jump cuts. We want them to add momentum to the video, but not to distract from the content. Generally, there should be at least 3 seconds between each cut.

4.  Adjust the YouTube end card:
- Sometimes the end card is a separate video file
- Use a transition to bring this end card on the screen. (I use the Shape Gradient Transition in Filmora, but you can use something different.)
- You may need to detach the audio from the original clip to make the transition work properly.
- Please do not alter the ending of this clip (no fades, cuts, etc). It is timed perfectly for the YouTube end card.

2. Screen Recording Tutorial Videos       Â
Â
Checklist:
- Insert the “Build Your Community” intro sequence
- Add Callouts (arrows or box outlines) to screen recording
- Add Zoom Jump Cuts (only if there’s a long Talking Head section)
- Add or adjust the YouTube end card
Â
Example:
The screen recording tutorials usually do not require title cards, but if they do, follow the instructions above.
Â

2. Â Add Callouts:
- Add callouts to make it clear which section of the screen I am talking about in the video. Use your best judgment about when the video needs a callout.
- Callouts should be red (#f52600) unless that color does not contrast enough with the background, in which case use your best judgment.
- Callouts can be:
- Arrows: Big red arrows to show which item in a menu is selected, or which button is being pressed.
- Box Outlines: Outlines highlight which field information is being typed into. Please use rounded corners for the boxes. Make sure the callouts don't fade from the screen too quickly.
- Callouts should quickly fade in and out.

       Video Thumbnails
Â
Video thumbnails should:
- Be 1280x720 pixels
- Include the title on the thumbnail. Check the Google spreadsheet, where you will see a column for the "Thumbnail Title" (which may be shorter than the video title).
- The words in bold in the title should be emphasized or larger on the thumbnail.
- All thumbnails should include one of the goofy photos of me on it.
- Colors:
- Primary color: #1DB1E2
- Secondary color is #0A26A7
Â
Â
When You’re Done…
Â
- Please upload the edited video to the same Google Drive folder that you downloaded the file from. DO NOT OVERWRITE THE ORIGINAL FILE. Please add “-EDITED V1” to the end of the file name so I know which one is the completed file.
- Upload the thumbnail to the same Google Drive folder
- In the Google Spreadsheet, change the status to "In Review."
- Email me to let me know that the video has been edited.
Â
Â
Revisions
- I will email you any revisions that need to be made.
- I will also upload a .TXT file to the Google folder with the necessary revisions.
- Once you've made the revisions, add "v2" to the filename (so I know it's Version 2), and upload it to the Google Drive folder.
- In the Google Spreadsheet, change the status to "Revisions Completed."

If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you!
